Water is the most important resource in the world. With the rapidly rising cost of water and its lack of availability in some areas, the water recovery system is quickly becoming the most important part of any process or wastewater stream. Gone are the days of a seemingly endless supply of our most precious resource.
The recovery of water can happen with many technologies depending on the constituents in the water. Typically there are 3 types of water. Potable water (known as "white water”, or “drinking water") “Greywater” gets its name from its cloudy appearance and from its status as being between fresh, and sewage water ("black water"). In a household context, greywater is the leftover water from baths, showers, hand basins and washing machines only. Some definitions of greywater include water from the kitchen sink. Any water containing human waste is considered black water.
Filtration is commonly the mechanical or physical operation which is used for the separation of solids from fluids (liquids or gases) by interposing a medium through which only the fluid can pass. Oversize solids in the fluid are retained, but the separation is not complete; solids will be contaminated with some fluid and filtrate will contain fine particles (depending on the pore size and filter thickness). Also referred to as total suspended solids or TSS, suspended matter consists of tiny insoluble particles in water that include grit, silt, clay, ferric iron and other precipitates.
In most cases, it is desirable to reclaim as much water as possible rather than discharging it, either to a drain or to a ground water source. Typical reasons include the cost of makeup water, environmental compliance with local codes, or to reclaim energy contained in the water which would otherwise be wasted. Whatever, the reason, in most cases, the water must be treated to remove the suspended solids that are circulating through the system. No matter what the origin, lake, pond, river, stream, seawater, etc., intake water will be contaminated with a variety of suspended solids. In order to prevent fouling of downstream equipment and ensure optimal efficiency, it is desirable to remove these suspended solids.
Although many of the Products Con-Serv Manufacturing provides is often used in Wastewater Recovery or the reclaim of water, this page is focused primarily on our Mechanical Particle Filtration product Line. As you can see in figure 1, Particle filtration is the filtration process that removes solids, that fall in the in the range of 1.0 to 1000+ microns.
NOTE: The Particle Size Separation chart is based on sand with a specific gravity of 2.7 gr./cm.
Many different types of particle filtration exist. From multimedia (depth filtration) , electro-coagulation, particle separators, bag filters, cartridge filters, Self Cleaning filters and Ultra- filtration are just some of the technologies available. Con-Serv Products include several of these technologies for use in the recovery, reclaim, and reuse of process water in many applications. A picture and brief description follows for some of these products.
ECONO FREE STANDING FILTER UNIT
The Econo Free Standing Filter Unit consists of a Free Standing Filter Housing for use with Washable Bags or Carbonized Peat Moss
CON-SERV STANDARD SLIM (YS) SERIES
The Standard Series Systems are designed with washable filters. These filters can be cleaned and re-used several times before discarding. Systems using this type of filter need to be monitored and should not be used in unattended operations. Flow rates for the Standard Filters are established using clean filters, as the filters blind from use, the flow rate decreases.
